Fraser island , the largest sand island in the world amd the holder of one every special animal, which plays a big part in the eco-system. . . the Fraser Island dingo. These animals have survived on the island for thousands of years, but when the aborigines left the island the dingoes had to rely on brumbies, fish offal and scavenging from refuse dumps as a food source.

There are information signs all around the island as people now fear the dingo and want to know more about them. The dingoes have always been in harmony with the aborigines and the residents of the island but ever since the tourist industry boomed, the tourists have tried to feed them and get up close for photos. This made them aggressive towards people for food.

Unfortunatley the dingo then came under scrutiny again as on the 30th April 2001 a young boy was killed by 2 dingoes. These dingoes were killed and the governments ordered a cull, and because of this incident 31 dingoes were destroyed. In future any dingo seen attacking a human will also be destroyed. People just have to remember that dingoes are wild animals and can attack.

In november 2001, the fraser island dingo managemnt stategy was released by the Queensland Parks and Wildlife Services. This was the Dingoes' death sentence. Previous dingoes supported themselves on food from the sea, birds, horses and rubbish left by the aboriginals and European settlement. The Forestry Industry encouraged people to leave scraps for the dingoes, but when the QPWS took over the management of the island, the dingoes' source of food diminshed. this national treasure must now scavenge for food. It is this behaviour that is causing constant ongoing conflicts with human visitors in the animals' daily request to survive.

Another big problem is the dingo fences around Eurong,Kingfisher Bay and Happy Valley. The Government think that this is the best way to stop the dingoes from attacking but the dingoes' have now learnt to get inside the 3 villages by jumping the grids.

If you have any suggestions about how to make the dingoes less agressive towards food and how to draw them away from the villages you can contact me on shorty_rox_96@hotmail.com
