Hockey or field hockey as some call it is played on natural grass, sand-based or water-based artificial turf. The ball is hard and around the size of an orange. The ball will either have dimples or be smooth depending on which surface you are playing on. It is an Olympic sport; men’s has been played since 1908 while woman’s has only been played since 1980. The hockey sticks are made from wood, carbon fibre, glass fibre or sometimes both with a J-shaped hook at the end. It is a male and female sport which can be played from an early age.
