Dangers you might face when living on a farm

When you live on a farm out in a remote place on a large continent with as many people as China has in Shanghai, you can face a lot of dangers and have to deal with them yourself. Some of those dangers are listed below.

Pinching Injuries – When one rotating piece of machinery and another piece of machinery come together, body parts including hands and fingers or clothing can be caught in the rotating part of the machine and become severed.

Wrapping Injuries – Hair or clothing can become wrapped around a shaft of a machine and the victim can be pulled into/onto the machine or hair can be pulled out, resulting in massive injury or death.

Shearing or Cutting Injuries – Machinery which contains hard edges or blades can be very hazardous to a person on a farm. If machinery like harvesting machinery, which has these blades or hard edges, is not used correctly it can result in severed limbs or very nasty wounds.

Thrown-object Injuries – Machinery such as slashers can disperse small stones at very high velocity and may cause blindness if hit in the eye. If the small stone does not hit the eye, you are very lucky yet it will still cause a severe injury.

Crushing Injuries – A person can be easily trapped and killed under an object that is being lowered. An example of this is the closing a garage door, a tractor rolling upon you, a car having no hand brake on and rolling over you, objects placed on shelves falling and hitting you.

Tips to avoid severe injury or death:

    Do not wear baggy clothing
    • Wear safety goggles when using a slasher or other similar machinery
    • Place all loose objects in a cupboard so that they cannot fall
    • Make sure you don’t stick any body parts into a machine with blades while it is turned on
    • Make sure the car and tractor’s hand brakes are on
    • Always use your common sense
    • Keep police, ambulance and fire brigade on speed dial
    • Tie your hair back if you have long hair
