I have been playing hockey since when I was about 4-5 years old. I have been playing hockey on grass also since then, so there-for all of my skills I have learnt have been on grass. I have made it into zone 3 times, and competed in areas such as Maryborough, Bundaberg, Gympie and Gladstone. But when I got there, I found that that they had turf fields.

Turf fields can come in two types, water base and sand base. I had not played on any of these fields before so I was quiet nervous, when we entered the field the coach started to explain what we could do and what we shouldn’t do. Since we never had played on these fields I was very confused, why did these fields feel different, why were there so many rules?

My first game was in Gladstone, which was on sand base. I was really nervous, my first game on these strange fields. I was so used to playing on grass, because that was what I learnt on. And I started to wonder why did these areas have these great smooth fields? Why didn’t we get one of these?

My second game in Bundaberg was a little better, I faintly remember that it was on water base, so then again I had to learn and get to know another field. But the main thing is I loved these fields, they were much easier to learn on, and I could do better skills. Because playing on turf was a different game, and requires different skills.

My third game in Maryborough, which was on water base. I started to get the hang of it and the skills it required. My fourth game in Gympie, which I only played about 1-2 months ago, was good as well; we played 1 game on sand base turf, and the rest on grass.

But as I went back to Hervey bay it all changed no more turf fields and no more skills to practice and work on. So what I’m saying is that since Hervey bay does not have any turf fields, we cannot keep on playing on turf every day, and that could affect people’s ability to play hockey. There are a lot of good things about having a turf field and what it involves, like:

    1. You learn new skills, because it’s a different game, and it requires different skills.
    2. When it rains you can always play on the turf field.
    3. If you want a career in hockey, such as the Olympics (which play on turf fields) then you will need practice on the turf fields.
    4. Associations can attract better coaches and players/more players.
    1. If you’ve got a turf field, teams are more willing to play at Hervey bay for zones and competitions.

    1. If Hervey bay, Bundaberg and Maryborough had a turf field- wide bay would be the centre of hockey.

Those are some good things about having a turf field, but turf fields; you don’t just go buy it the end. There some other things and concerns that you must note:

    1. It’s expensive to buy and hard to maintain
    2. Uses lot of water (if a water base)
    3. You might lose some families because the bills will go up for looking after and maintaining the turf fields.
I have been affected by this because I who love hockey, and may want a career in it, but without being able to play on turf, and experience this, I might not get my dream.
